Zanzibar is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful islands in the Indian Ocean, if not the world. It is one of the best-kept travel secrets and remains unspoiled by mass tourism. Zanzibar has been popular throughout history with artists, musicians and poets and still captivates people to this day. The very name conjures wondrous images and evokes intrigue.
The very words Indian Ocean Islands conjure up images of tropical luxury and stupendous extravagance. Famed for cobalt-blue seas, white sandy beaches and luxury hotels you will enjoy sunbathing, swimming and relaxing. The Indian Ocean islands are not just for lazing. The many historic sights, cultural diversity, geographic variation and almost limitless activities will easily distract you from the daily grind of beach and pool. But perhaps its single biggest asset is the relaxed charm of its warm and welcoming people. The islands of Zanzibar and Pemba offer super beaches, fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling as well as some of the best beaches in the world. Mafia off the coast of Tanzania is another great island destination with the added advantage of being easily combined with an East Africa Safari. The ultimate finale to any African safari holiday is time out on an Indian Ocean Island.
Zanzibar is an archipelago consisting of many islands, of which Unguja (or ‘Zanzibar Island’) is the most visited. You can visit many of these other islands and even stay for a few nights in several different places. Different locations on Zanzibar itself and on the surrounding islands have different benefits and provide complementary yet contrasting experiences giving you a wider experience of the local culture, the amazing natural environment in this part of the world, and the different types of beaches on offer. Many people choose Zanzibar because, unlike other destinations such as the Maldives, there is a great deal to see and do outside your hotel, and there is much to be gained from splitting your time between different locations.
For example, just offshore from Stone Town, (the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site), you’ll find several small islands, like Chumbe, Chapwani, Changuu and Bawe. Changuu Island (also known as ‘Prison Island’) is well worth visiting for the giant tortoises and to explore the forested interior of the island – home to a diverse variety of wildlife. Chumbe Island was featured in the BBC ‘Oceans’ series as a leading example of responsible tourism funding conservation. Snorkelling the marine park around Chumbe is nothing short of breathtaking, and for many people swimming with turtles and dolphins is a highlight of their holiday. Just offshore from Matemwe on the North East coast, you’ll find the world-famous Mnemba Island Atoll, again a marine park offering spectacular snorkelling and diving. To the north of Zanzibar Island, you’ll find Pemba Island with remote hideaways like Fundu Lagoon and The Manta Resort offering incredible world-class diving in some of the most crystal clear waters in the world.
On Zanzibar Island, you’ll also find restaurants and bars on the beach in Nungwi and Kendwa on the Northern tip of the island, and to a lesser extent in Jambiani, Paje and Michamvi on the South-Eastern coast. This again entices you out of your hotel to soak up some of the local beach life and socialise with locals and other travellers alike. The Zanzibari Swahili culture is very warm and friendly and everywhere on the island you feel welcomed.
Elsewhere on Zanzibar, you can find small secluded hideaways on deserted beaches like Kilindi, Unguja Lodge and Echo Beach Hotel, where you’ll see very few if any other people at all. Endless pristine white sands and palm trees provide the picture-perfect tropical island paradise, and Zanzibar is well known as a very romantic honeymoon and wedding destination.
Another highlight of Zanzibar Island is the Jozani Forest Chwaka Bay National Park. Not many people realise you can actually go on a half-day walking safari through this National Park without even leaving Zanzibar. This activity combines very well with the half-day dolphin spotting and swimming boat adventure through the Menai bay conservation area. You can swim with dolphins in the morning and meet the monkeys in the forest in the afternoon!
This wide variety of different attractions is one of the many reasons people return to the Zanzibar archipelago year after year. With so much to see and do and so many different beaches to explore, it’s almost impossible to fit everything into just one holiday!
